Zionism

1886

A man by the name of Theodor Herzl, an Austro-Hungarian journalist and writer, suggested a solution to the problem.

Herzl argued that the Europeans will never accept the Jews as part of them, therefore the Jews must be separated from the rest of the world. In his 1896 pamphlet "The Jewish State," Herzl argued for the creation of a homeland for the Jewish people as a solution to the "Jewish question" in Europe.

In the beginning, the movement did not attract a lot of people, especially Jews:

1. Religious Jews: Religious people were concerned that the emphasis on nationalism might overshadow the spiritual and cultural aspects of Judaism.
2. Concerns about Antisemitism: While the Zionist movement emerged partly as a response to antisemitism, some Jews believed that the establishment of a Jewish state is a confirmation of the antisemites claims that Jews are different and should be secluded. That this might exacerbate tensions and provoke more antisemitic sentiments.
3. Anti-Nationalist Sentiments: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were Jews who were active in socialist and internationalist movements, and they were often critical of nationalist ideologies, including Zionism. Some believed that focusing on class solidarity and universalist principles would be more effective in addressing the challenges facing Jews.
4. Assimilation: In some cases, Jews in Western Europe were assimilating into their respective societies and adopting the culture of their host countries. For these individuals, the idea of establishing a Jewish state seemed contrary to their assimilationist goals.

Even though the Zionist movement had the support of some wealthy families like the Rothschilds. Not a lot of people were prepared to leave their homes and move their lives to some unknown fate.
In the early 1900s things started to look better for Jews in Europe, which made it even harder for Zionist to attract supporters.
Nevertheless, the Zionists held that the idea that no matter how nice things are at the moment, the people will turn on the Jews and another catastrophe awaits. Therefore, they should separate themselves in a state of their own.
